In Finnish mythology, Vellamo is the water goddess who rules seas, lakes, and rivers. Cows were her sacred animals but Vellamo´s cows were magical cows that could live and breath underwater. In ancient Finland, cows were sacred animals of women. According to legend sometimes during the morning mist, Vellamo and her magical cows would rise to the surface and would walk on shores and beaches and sometimes mortals could see glimpses of them.
